HEMMEL & ERDE DUO

The Twente carillon duo Hemmel & Eerde [Heaven & Earth] gave their first concert in 1991 in Oldenzaal, the Netherlands, followed by many more. In 2018, they marked 30 years of friendship with the programme Friends for Life: the Score So Far, a bond forged under the bells of the Campus Carillon at the University of Twente (UT).
Hemmel & Eerde is a traditional Twente dish of apples and potatoes – but here, it symbolizes more: carillon bells! Moreover, it is a metaphor: Thoughtful, grounded Hylke keeps the impulsive, imaginative Esther just touching the earth.
Hylke started studying Electrical Engineering in 1983. Upon arriving at the university, he was immediately drawn to the sound of the Campus Carillon. Even before his first lecture, he found himself behind the baton keyboard. He took lessons from Karel Borghuis for nearly nine years and, on 1 May 1992, succeeded him as city carillonist of Oldenzaal.
Esther studied Instructional Design and Technology. In 1988, the enchanting sound of the carillon caught her ear. Curious, she climbed the tower and discovered Hylke playing! Inspired, she began lessons with Karel Borghuis and regularly performed as a substitute on various Twente towers for years. In 2018, she was asked to become city carillonist of Enschede.
