HYLKE BANNING
was born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. At the age of six he took up organ lessons with Dirk S. Donker, organist and former carillonist of several Dutch cities. In 1983, at the start of his studies in Electrical Engineering at the University of Twente, he discovered the bells of the Campus Carillon. For almost nine years Karel Borghuis, the city carillonist of Oldenzaal, taught him how to play this instrument. In 1992 he succeeded his teacher as city carillonist. Since then, he plays almost weekly the Gillett & Johnston instrument in the tower of the St. Plechelmus Basilica. He also studied for several years carillon at the Netherlands Carillon School in Amersfoort with Arie Abbenes. Together with Esther Schopman, he forms the carillon duo Hemmel & Eerde. Like Esther, he now teaches carillon himself. From 1994 until 2000 Banning was secretary of the board of the Dutch Carillon Society and also for almost ten years a member of its editorial committee. Banning was secretary of the Executive Committee of the World Carillon Federation from 1996 until 2008. Not only did he perform in The Netherlands, but he was also a guest recitalist in several countries. As tenor he is singing in a chamber choir. At present he is as Functional Consultant employed by Sigmax, a company that develops software for ticket inspection in public transpor.
