Composer’s hour
Before 5 pm, we present pieces specially composed for the Town Hall automatic carillon by young composers.
The melodies will be changing, so we encourage you to listen and check them out!
In F (or C) is a one-minute composition, created for the composer’s hour of the automatic carillon at Gdańsk’s Main Town Hall. The piece is written in the key of F, but sounds in C, because the Town Hall carillon sounds a perfect fifth higher than the written notes. The composition stems from my fascination with the sound of bells, and at the same time is a compositional etude exploring the possibilities of automatic playing at a fast tempo. But could it be performed by a human?
Artur Samul
He is a graduate of composition, solo singing and harpsichord at the Academy of Music in Gdansk.
While studying the latter, he practiced playing the carillon and learned to arrange for automatic carillons. As part of a carillon workshop in November 2023, he won a competition to arrange the Rota, which was installed on a state-of-the-art carillon automatic computer recently installed on the tower of the Main Town Hall and is performed daily at 12:00 pm.
